Americans enjoy spending their free time outdoors. Whether it is participating in sports, hiking, hunting, etc, these activities all occur outside. So it’s no surprise that the environment is affected by us when we participate in these pastimes. The question is, to what extent are the things we do hurting the area around us? While it may seem obvious that humans cause negative effects to the earth, with littering, erosion from hiking, and other actions, outdoor recreation holds some benefits concerning the environment. Our country has passed laws designed to preserve our environment without banning access entirely. While new laws have been created, and old ones changed, they all hold a common purpose: to protect the wilderness. But are these actions effective, and are they enough? What more should be done?
